EB across the Atlantic, while Red Beet Records makes a splash!!

Hey folks,

Just wanted to mention that I'm heading to Europe at the beginning of May to play some acoustic shows. I'll be joined by stellar East Nashville songsmith Peter Cooper and we're doing 12 dates in Holland and Germany. Yowza! Peter and Last Train Home are both signed to the Dutch label Corazong Records, and so we're doing a combo-promo tour.

Please check out the tour dates on the "tour" page of this website, and tell all your euro-friends to come see us!!!

Not coincidentally, my record label, Red Beet Records, has just released Peter's CD in the U.S. It's called "Mission Door," and it's spectacular. Read the reviews at www.redbeetrecords.com and get you some of his great music!

I've also just released the debut CD of Fayssoux McLean, who is a spectacular singer from South Carolina, whom you know (if you know her at all) for singing harmonies on the first few Emmylou Harris records, the great, great ones from the mid-'70s, like "Elite Hotel," "Luxury Liner," "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town," "Pieces of the Sky." On Fayssoux's debut, "Early," Emmylou returns the favor and sings lovely harmonies, but the show is all Fayssoux's. Don't miss it. And note the fact that her CD was produced by Peter Cooper.

Last Train Home, meanwhile, is getting great notices over in Europe for "Last Good Kiss." I wish I could be taking the whole band over there, but dang, the dollar is low over there, and it's just too much to bring 5 people.. someday!

Below I've pasted in the latest rave (very positive, though he does point out that we're destined for obscurity...)

Thanks for reading, and i'll be blogging while in Europe! Stay tuned!

-- Eric

p.s. this news page and the "EB's Blog" page on this site now have the RSS feed capability, so click on that if you want to know when I've been busy typing!

Last Good Kiss

**** (4 out of 5 stars)

Eclectic musical stew from an accomplished band of ace musicians A band like Last Train Home are unlikely to feature in any mainstream chart. In fact, you're unlikely to hear them on mainstream radio (unless you think Bob Harris is mainstream).

You see this Nashville-based outfit are too eclectic for their own good. They bring in musical threads from country, folk, bluegrass, swing, jazz, blues, rock'n'roll and even mariachi into an original repertoire that has elevated them into an acclaimed live act but a little known recording one. They've released a half-dozen albums on small indie labels-each one has been critically-acclaimed and readily embraced by a small, but growing fan base.

But to the general music buying public who look for tunes they know or a recognised sound that doesn't colour outside of pre-set boundaries, Last Train Home is destined to remain virtually unknown.

But Maverick readers are more discerning than the multitudes, so they should get what's going on here. It's high-class rootsy, rock-inflected music. Most songs are written by lead singer Eric Brace and range from the heartbreaking ballad ‘Go Now’ to the almost jazzy ‘You’ and the rhythmic ‘Kissing Booth’ with a little fuzz on the electric guitars, some accordion way down in the mix and a soulful lead vocal.

They throw in a couple of bonus tracks-a neat acoustic reworking of the Carter Family's ‘Lovers Farewell’ and Dylan's ‘This Wheel's On Fire’. Eclectic, maybe, but also very accessible and highly recommended. testurl('http://www.redbeetrecords.com/store'); testupload('');
www.redbeetrecords.com/store

By Barry Mazor

Last Train Home: Live At Iota (Red Beet/String Theory Media)
-- This DVD captures, very well, a typically varied and smart performance by the veteran, versatile
bi-capital Washington and Nashville-based alt-country band, in a show
marking their tenth anniversary at an Arlington, Virginia nightclub. Lead
singer and songwriter Eric Brace produced and edited this polished,
multi-camera video, along with director Craig Havighurst; the result is
quite a sterling example of what indie bands and filmmakers can do together.
As the band - in its horn-augmented, full-sized D.C. version - blasts and
coos its way through Brace's originals old and new, plus their trademark
covers of classics from Tom T. Hall, Merle Haggard, Rodney Crowell and
Dylan, the cameras, like the guitars, steel, horns and keyboards (Jen
Gunderman), are in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.
It's alive for you.

Here's what Bill Fiskics-Warren just wrote about "Last Good Kiss" in the Nashville paper The Rage (and its sister paper The Tennessean) (April 25, 2007):

Now officially based in Nashville (as opposed to having one foot here and the other in Washington, D.C.), roots-rockers Last Train Home are a testament to vision and persistence that makes being in it for the long haul seem like something that's actually worth doing. The band has always had a rousing live show, as well as terrific, well-wrought songs courtesy of frontman Eric Brace. Now, on their new Last Good Kiss, they've finally made a record that packs a sonic and emotional wallop that completes the package. The snarling, muscular guitar of recent addition Steve Wedemeyer is a big part of it. Even more dramatic, though, is the stamp of keyboardist and accordionist Jen Gunderman, a woman who plays with enough heart and imagination to spur any band on to new heights.

— Bill Friskics-Warren, The Tennessean

Here's another incredible review we just got in Audio Audition Magazine

By Hermon Joyner:

Relationships are at the heart of most songs—relationships gone right and those that go wrong. There are the relationships that give us a reason to live and those that leave us questioning everything. “Last Good Kiss,” the latest album from the Nashville band Last Train Home, is filled with songs that explore the boundaries of those relationships and examine how they intersect with each other, and they are played with heartbreaking earnestness.

Usually considered to be a leading alt-country or Americana band, Last Train Home is exploring new ground in this album. While some songs contain colorings of alt-country, most of the songs on this album fall into the category of indie-rock. The prevalence of electric guitar, played by Steve Wedemeyer either in understated and minimalist guitar solos or in shimmeringly resonant curtains of chords are all perfectly rendered in the most economical fashion, ends up giving the album a closer connection to rock music. It’s really the subject matter of relationships that ties it to country music, providing a link to the Hank Williams tradition of songwriting. Also helping to break the sound of the group away from alt-country is Jen Gunderman on keyboards, like the pulsing Rhodes piano accompaniment on “You” and even on accordion, surely one of the most underutilized instruments in popular music. Rounding out the group are Jim Gray on electric bass and Martin Lynds on drums and percussion, laying down the solid “tracks” that this Train runs on. Kevin Cordt plays trumpet on a couple of numbers, further taking the music away from the country realm and treading on the boundaries of jazz and Latin music. His boozy beautiful solo on “The Color Blue” is playfully sexy. If you can say anything about Last Train Home, it’s that they know how to play as a group—intuiting both how to step back and support each other, and how to step out front and shine. There’s a level of comfort and confidence that infuses all their performances on this album.

Frontman Eric Brace wrote most of the songs on “Last Good Kiss.” In fact, Brace wrote all of them except for guitarist Steve Wedemeyer’s tune “Can’t Come Undone.” The songs range from seductively timed ballads (Go Now) to energetically driving tunes (Last Good Kiss). If there’s a consistency to the songs on this album, it’s that they’re all consistently excellent. Brace delivers the vocals with sincerity and authenticity that is nearly devastating—every note and phrase rings of heart-felt and life-lived truth. And if there is a better vocalist working the scene at this time, I really don’t know who it could be. His voice is colored in turns by passion, weariness, elation, and angst. Eric Brace is the real deal. “Last Good Kiss” is a significant step forward in the evolution of a great band, and could very well be the best album of their career. This gets my highest recommendation.

"Last Good Kiss" is here. It has arrived from the manufacturer on our doorstep and we're pleased as can be. Thanks to Bill Thompson for his gorgeous design of the whole CD package. Thanks to Amy Dickerson for all the great photographs on the CD cover. Thanks to Oasis CD for zooming it through production without a hitch.

The CD will be available on this site by Thursday Feb. 15. By the following week, you'll be able to get it at: Miles of Music, CD Baby, Village Records, Amazon, with more mail-order outlets to come. "Last Good Kiss" will also be on all the main download sites very soon as well.

We're so proud of this record. We had a great time making it at 16 Ton studios in Nashville, working with Mike Esser and Patrick Miller (our engineers on this). It's the first LTH record to feature our guitarist Steve Wedemeyer and keyboardist Jen Gunderman. Playing with each of them over the past year and a half has pushed us to new heights as a band, and we hope you'll agree.

If you're in the Washington DC area on Feb 16-17-18, please come by IOTA Club & Cafe for our big CD release shows. It'll be quite a party.

Here's what The Washington Post has to say about "Last Good Kiss" :

'LAST TRAIN HOME is based in Nashville these days, but the band travels so much it might seem that frontman Eric Brace would be hard-pressed to keep coming up with first-rate songs between tour stops. Apparently, that's not a problem. If anything, "Last Good Kiss," the quintet's new release, suggests that as far as the quality of Brace's songwriting is concerned, the more road work the better.

Consider the album's opening and title track. A rushing, Last Train express out of Nashville, where the disc was recorded, the song swiftly reveals Brace's knack for conveying hair-trigger emotions with just a few choice words. It's also a stirring showcase for the band's new lineup, featuring guitarist Steve Wedemeyer and keyboardist Jen Gunderman, formerly of the Jayhawks.

Brace, who wrote the "Nightwatch" column for Weekend a few years back, penned 10 of the 11 songs collected here, including "May," a poignant reflection on the jarring nature of family loss. Then there's "Flood," a song about the redemptive power of love with soaring gospel overtones, and "Anywhere but Here," a loping, heartsick plaint. They couldn't be pitched further apart. But each in its own distinct way ranks among the band's best studio tracks. In addition to well-crafted songs, Brace's increasingly soulful vocals and guitarist Wedemeyer's twang-town thrust, the album features evocative touches of accordion, trumpet, banjo, percussion and vocal harmonies. None of the arrangements is more atmospheric than "The Color Blue," the album's enchanting coda, but there's no shortage of mood-enhancing accents from start to finish.'

Happy new year everyone !
It's going to be a fine one.
We're moving into our 10th anniversary as a band. There's been lots of changes throughout our time, and they've all led us to where we are right now: about to release the best LTH record yet.
That's going to happen in February with a CD release weekend up in Washington DC (well, Arlington, VA) at our old stomping grounds, IOTA (oh, we did some stompin'). If you're up around there Feb 15-16-17, then please think about stopping by.
And for the first time, we'll have a video to accompany one of the songs: "Last Good Kiss." We filmed it at the tiny airport in Sewanee, TN, back in September, and it's being edited as I type this.... who knows where it'll be seen.... we're in discussions with some o' them TV stations that still play videos, and we'll see what they say.
Meanwhile, looking back on 2006, one of the highlights for Eric, Martin, and Jim was certainly the release of "The Skylighters" on Eric's new label, Red Beet Records (www.redbeetrecords.com). The Skylighters are E, M, & J, plus Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Gaudreau, two of the finest pickers the planet has ever seen. Together, they made a record full of country and bluegrass and Tin Pan Alley and gospel and... and.... lots more. It's one they're all really proud of and it's worth more than a listen. (And if you're in Nashville on Fri. Jan. 19, you can see the Skylighters playing one of their rare live shows, at the legendary Station Inn.)
This is a big year for LTH, and we hope you'll be a part of it. Frankly speaking, we'll need all the help we can get in spreading the word and getting more folks out to shows. If you've got a club in your town you'd like us to play, send us a note. If you've got a music writer at your paper you think might be open to hearing the new LTH, definitely drop us a line.
And mostly, please accept our thanks for listening to LTH and coming to our shows. It means the world to us.
Did we already say "happy new year".....? Let's hope for a great one.....

If you go to www.redbeetrecords.com, you'll find out a ton of stuff about musicians from East Nashville. There are 29 artists on "The Other Side: Music From East Nashville," including Last Train Home. No surprise there, as Red Beet Records was the brain child of LTH's Eric Brace. It's a way of celebrating the incredible music scene that LTH found itself in upon its move to Nashville three years ago. Artists like Kevin Gordon, Todd Snider, Garrison Starr, Chely Wright, Paul Burch, and many many more have all become musical comrades-in-arms with the LTH gang, and we're proud to be on a disc with them all. Check it out, and discover some real gems recorded by some lesser known musicians, and of course some great tracks by better known folks.
Last Train Home contributes "Last Good Kiss," a rockin' little number that you can hear on this site's streaming jukebox and which will be found on the next LTH CD.
You can also download that song if you sign up for the LTH e-mail list.
That very tune was the soundtrack to the very first video LTH has ever done (we're not counting the "Doughnut Girl" attempt a few years back)... We filmed it at a lovely little airport in Sewanee, TN, (directed by Amy Dickerson, the photographer who shot many of the great shots you see on this website!). We hope to have it all edited and done and up on this site by early January.

Meanwhile, LTH hits the road on Nov. 10-11-12 to play in Lafayette LA, Houston TX, and New Braunfels TX (see the tour page for more info) and if you're anywhere near those places, we hope you'll come out and say hi.

With holidays coming up, don't forget about the perfect stocking stuffer:
"Holiday Limited"
It's LTH's sublime xmas CD, with 10 songs (including two original tunes by Eric), plus instrumental interludes on banjo and trombone. It's been praised in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Tennessean, and the Washington Post as one of the finest holiday albums of recent years.... and you can order it right here on this website!
Go to the "Releases" page and take it from there.

As usual, LTH will be playing a holiday weekend at IOTA in Arlington, VA, Dec 15-16-17, and the opening act will be our very own Jen Gunderman, the fabulous pianist whose been playing with LTH a lot this year. She and Martin and Jim will be re-creating the entire "Charlie Brown's Christmas" as recorded by Vince Gueraldi. You know the one. You ahve to come out and do that dance. You know the one.
And as usual, LTH will be playing IOTA on New Years Eve (and Ashland Coffee & Tea on Dec 30, aka New Years Eve Eve).....
Hope you'll be there for all the festivities....

She's taking us to a tiny airport in Suwannee, TN, and we'll see what we come up with!!! Woohoo! Our first video!! (Those of you who were at IOTA a few years ago as we taped what we thought would become a "Doughnut Girl" video, we're still not sure what has become of that footage. Working on it....)

Then there's the launch of Red Beet Records, which will be the new label home of Last Train Home. Give a look at www.redbeetrecords.com. You'll notice that we're predicting a new LTH CD in January, 2007. And you can hear a preview of that on the LTH streaming jukebox. It's that new song "Last Good Kiss." As you can hear, the band is on to something big. That song will also be on the Red Beet site's jukebox, along with songs from TWO other releases: "The Skylighters" and "The Other Side: Music From East Nashville." Here's some info on them:

The Skylighters is a side project of Eric, Martin, and Jim's. They took a little time away from Last Train Home to record some songs with a couple of their musical heroes, Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Gaudreau. Those two are both legends in the bluegrass world: Mike was a founding member of the groundbreaking band, The Seldom Scene. His dobro playing changed the bluegrass world (heck, he taught Jerry Douglas!). He also played with Cliff Waldron & the New Shades of Grass, Chesapeake, Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Auldridge Bennett & Gaudreau, and lots of other folks. On top of that, Mike is an incredible pedal steel player, and though he's played a little steel on Chesapeake recordings, it's here with The Skylighters that he really gets to show what he's got.
Jimmy Gaudreau is one of the world's greatest mandolin players ever. He was an early member of the Country Gentlemen (replacing John Duffy when Duffy left to form the Seldom Scene), he played with J.D. Crowe & the New South, the Tony Rice Unit, Spectrum, Chesapeake, Auldridge Bennett & Gaudreau, Robin & Linda Williams and many more amazing acts.

When the five of us got together for a show in 2002, we had a blast and promised to do it all again sometime. Over the next three years, there were only four live shows, but they were magical musical evenings. We kept talking about how we needed to go into the studio to capture the magic, and finally, in January, 2006, we did.

With former LTH guitarist Jared Bartlett producing, we recorded 14 songs in two days, and now they've become the debut Red Beet Records release. The self-titled CD is full of country, bluegrass, western swing, gospel, country-rock, and more. We're all extremely proud of it. We hope you'll give it a listen and buy it and take it home with you.

If you're in the DC area on Thursday Oct. 12, maybe you'd like to come out to the Birchmere for The Skylighters' CD release show. We're sharing the bill with the great Tim O'Brien.
And if you're in the Nashville area, keep an eye on the Station Inn's schedule for a Skylighters date, probably in January.

As for "The Other Side: Music from East Nashville," well, that's just about the greatest colleciton of music you'll ever hear. Ever since some of us moved to East Nashville from DC a few years ago, we've been amazed at the amazing music scene here, consisting mainly of friends and neighbors: Todd Snider, Kevin Gordon, Thad Cockrell, Elizabeth Cook, Tim Carroll, Tom Mason, Amelia White, Paul Burch, and on and on and on and on.
When we were talking about the creation of Red Beet Records, we thought about how to launch it with a splash. A collection from the East Side seemed like the way to go. It soon became clear, once we got started compiling it, that it was going to be a two-CD set.
It took just two months for the idea to become reality. The record is out, and you can read more about it at www.redbeetrecords.com. If you're in Nashville end of October, we're having TWO CD-release shows: Friday Oct. 27 at the Basement, and Saturday Oct. 28 at the Family Wash.

So that's all the news for now, and if that's not enough for you, then you've got a problem.
Stay in touch,
Come see us,
Drop us a line,
Be our myspace friend (www.myspace.com/lasttrainhome)

And see you soon.......

Hey everybody,

We've made a new website! What do you think?
Please do tell us your thoughts. There's a streaming jukebox so you can listen to ten LTH songs. One of them is a newly recorded song, "Last Good Kiss," which we just did down here in Nashville. It's a taste of the next record, which should be out in January. We'll be playing lots of new songs live. Hope you like 'em.

(You can download "Last Good Kiss" if you sign up for our e-mail list.... if you're already on our e-mail list, well, be patient, and we'll get a download up there for you soon.)

We've been touring like crazy this summer, but we're not done yet! There's lots of shows coming up in September and October. Please come out and say hey.

In other news, keep an eye out for a new CD by The Skylighters. That's a group featuring Eric, Jim, and Martin from LTH, along with bluegrass legends Mike Auldridge (dobro, pedal steel) and Jimmy Gaudreau (mandolin, guitar). It's country, bluegrass, western swing, honky tonk, folk-rock, tin pan alley, and it's (frankly) great. "The Skylighters" comes out in September on Red Beet Records, a spankin' new Nashville label that's going to release the next Last Train Home CD as well. We'll keep you posted on all of that, you can be sure.

We want to take a moment here to thank Eric Christensen, who for the past six years has volunteered his time and his extraordinary skills to create and maintain the Last Train Home website. It was a gorgeous site and we're sad to see it go. We're updating with a good team of people here in Nashville, Echo Music, and they've got lots of ideas on how to get the word out on LTH to a bunch of new people, something that's just gotta happen for us to keep this train on the tracks.

So here's a huge THANK YOU to Eric Christensen. Give him a round of applause (can you hear it, ec??).

And getting back to that point about spreading the word on LTH, please give us a hand on that front. If you like LTH, chances are you've got friends who'd like us too, and we need your help. Send them a link to this site, and tell 'em to sign up for the LTH email list so we can let them know about gigs near them and such. They'll get that free download too.... beat that with a stick!!

Guess that's all for now.
Stay in touch.
See you in your hometown.
Or else plan a trip to Nashville or D.C. and time it so you can see an LTH show!
Thanks....

-- LTH

So after playing nearly 50 gigs all over the dang place since the end of April, we decided we were in prime form to enter the studio. We'd been working up new tunes, and figured it was time to lay them down. So on July 11 we went into 16 Ton, a fine, fine studio right on Music Row in Nashville and went to work.
In two days we got most of the tracks down to seven new songs, some of which you may have heard us play live before, but they've never sounded this good. Man O Man.
We are FIRED UP !!!
The songs make up half of the next LTH record. We'll be recording the other half of it this fall. And the CD will be released in January, 2007, on the new Red Beet Records label, a mad, mad brainchild of Eric's.
Also coming out on Red Beet, in September are two cool things:

THE SKYLIGHTERS, which consists of Eric, Martin, and Jim from LTH, along with bluegrass legends Mike Auldridge and Jimmy Gaudreau. There will be more about all that here in a few weeks.
And:

THE OTHER SIDE: MUSIC FROM EAST NASHVILLE, which will be a two CD compilation of all the great musicians that LTH has encountered in their new home of East Nashville (setting of that song "Dogs on the East Side," off of "Bound Away").
There will be more info on both of those releases soon at www.redbeetrecords.com... stay tuned for that.
And stay tuned in the next few days for the launching of the new LTH website! Same bat-time, same bat-URL... just better.
Thanks for your patience on that, and we'll see you soon, ja??

P.S. The photo is from June 2, in Greensburg, PA, where we were playing in a band-shell in a lovely city park. The only problem was the pouring rain, so finally we invited the crowd (the hardy souls who were sticking it out)onto the stage. It turned out to be one of the coolest shows we've ever played.

Nashville's "Tin Pan South" songwriter's conference is over and done, with thousands of great performers hitting "Music City" to glean some secrets and share a few of their own. LTH frontman Eric Brace was lucky enough to be invited to perform in-the-round at the 12th&Porter nightclub on March 29, along with some incredibly talented folks: Nanci Griffith, Elizabeth Cook, and Peter Cooper.
The place was packed, of course, due to Nanci's stardom, but the crowd was very supportive of everyone else's contributions. The foursome rolled through five songs each (and all joined in when Eric sang Buck Owens' "Together Again," in memoriam), and had a grand time of it.
It was gratifying to hear the other three folks on stage praising Last Train Home and exhorting the audience to come see us whenever they could.
Peter is the man who wrote in the Tennessean newspaper: "Best Live Show 2005: Tie Between Neil Young at the Ryman and Last Train Home at the Family Wash." He is also proving to be one of the most daring and excellent songwriters in Nashville. Elizabeth Cook is a member of the grand Ole Opry, a splendid songwriter, sings like a southern songbird and breaks hearts just by walking into a room (and her husband Tim Carroll has joined LTH on stage with his Telecaster many times). And Nanci. Well, she's Nanci Griffith. Eric performed NG's song "I Wish It Would Rain" that night, with everyone's help (including Nanci's -- see photo). She was incredibly gracious and supportive of us up-n'-comers, and it was an honor to sing and play with her.

So the tans have pretty much faded after the Virgin Islands tour, and we're hunkering down in East Nashville to practice new songs. We're whipping them into shape for the upcoming recording sessions that will lead to a new CD coming out this fall.

In between rehearsals, the band is playing out a bunch (check the tour schedule), and Eric gets to play a show with one of his heroes, Nanci Griffith. It's part of the Tin Pan South music conference here in Nashville, an in-the-round evening with Eric, Miz Griffith, Elizabeth Cook (another superb Nashville songstress), and Peter Cooper (a music writer with the Nashville Tennessean newspaper and also a superb songwriter). This fine evening of song takes place Wednesday March 29 at 6:30 pm, at 12th & Porter.

Don't hate us, but yes, we're in the middle of our second annual Virgin Islands tour. Here's a shot of us in the town of Fredericksted on St. Croix. We play every night, and lie on the beach every day. Okay, you can hate us. WE would hate us if we weren't us. Read all about it by clicking on the 'tour log' button over there to the left.
We're back home on March 10, then it's back to work planning the new CD. We're hoping to get it out the first week of September.
Meanwhile, you can hear our version of Peter Case's song "Baltimore" on the new 3-CD P.Case tribute "A Case for Case," released by Hungry for Music.
And you can hear our version of the dBs song "White Train" on the new dBs tribute CD, "Stand-Ins For Decibels," released by Paisley Pop records. We're proud and honored to be part of both of those.
(And soon to be released Buffalo Springfield tribute on Not Lame Records will have LTH's rendition of "Kind Woman," so keep an eye out for that too.)

2006 is off to a roaring start, and as you can see in the picture, we need some coffee to keep up.
We're headed to Oklahoma and Texas for a two-week run (check the tour itinerary for specifics), then in February we hit the Virgin Islands again for two-weeks... And when we come back all tanned from that jaunt, we'll start work on the next LTH CD.

Meanwhile, in The Tennessean's end-of-year round-up, we read these amazing words from writer Peter Cooper:
"Best Live Show 2005: Tie between Neil Young at the Ryman and Last Train Home at the Family Wash."

It's getting on Christmas time and such, and we've got our annual holiday bash all weekend long at our home base of IOTA, in Arlington, Virginia.
